Winston Mac Anuff – Nostradamus – (2008)

 Winston Mac Anuff - Nostradamus - (2008)

After his genre crossing experiments A Drop (With Camille Baz Baz’s Baz Baz Orchestra) and Paris Rockin’ (with Java) the electric dread Winston McAnuff has finally returned to his roots. This will please hardcore reggae fans; particularly in Winston’s adopted home of France, where some disliked Paris Rockin’s use of the accordion based “bal musette” they had been trying to escape since birth.
Nostradamus by Winston McAnuff

Outside France, however, these arrangements sounded exotic and brave, and Paris RockinÂ’ has been hailed as a modern classic by music lovers around the world. The question is, can McAnuff take the spirit of his later works into an album of straight roots and sate both his traditional fanbase and his new less reggae-centric followers alike?

The answer is a resounding “yes”. Nostradamus, produced by Clive Hunt and featuring Earl Chinna Smith on guitar and Leroy Horsemouth Wallace on drums, fuses hard, clean (slightly cold) roots arrangements with Winston’s more mature songwriting for a recording whose 12 cuts all say “I’m a hit”. As with Paris Rockin’, some reveal themselves early, such as the title track – riding a twin onslaught of bass and piano, inspired by Jimmy Radway’s rhythm to Desmond Young’s Warning, with an anti war lyric written by Winston’s brother John. Takin’ It All, the only non-reggae composition on the disc, also stands out. But, soon enough, every tune gets into your head, without ever using a hackneyed pop contrivance or falling back on a dull, roots-by-numbers device.

Nostradamus is another quality offering by an underrated star who continues to blossom with age, but carries one small caveat. Despite reggaeÂ’s down to earth image the best Jamaican musicians have never been hostage to received notions of authenticity. For his next album this hardcore reggae fan hopes Winston ignores the doubters, and lets his maverick ideas flow.

Dr Dre – The Chronic 2001

Dr Dre - The Chronic 2001

2001, sometimes referred to by fans as Chronic 2001 or Dr. Dre 2001, is a 1999 hip hop album by famed rapper and producer Dr. Dre, featuring guest appearances from Snoop Dogg, Hittman, Eminem, Xzibit, and others. Originally intended to be called The Chronic 2000 (the name was changed because of litigation with Dr. Dre’s former label Death Row Records), the album is the long-awaited follow-up to Dr. Dre’s classic 1992 album The Chronic. It brought the West Coast hip hop scene back to the spotlight after years of obscurity, showed that Dr. Dre could still make hits, and further established the career of Eminem, who went on to eventually become one of the best-selling rappers of all time. 2001 debuted at #2 on the Billboard charts and was eventually certified 6x platinum by the RIAA, with total worldwide sales of 10 million.

My Review
Short for “Versus”, Pearl Jam’s Second album runs like a train, “Go” and “Animal” play into classic grunge sensibilities, slow burners “Indifference” and “Elderly Woman” run deeper than the roots of a hundred year old tree, and “Rearviewmirror” is one of their most underappreciated killer songs.

External Reviews
Pearl Jam are explosive. Few American bands have arrived more clearly talented than this one did with Ten; and Vs. tops even that debut. Terrific players with catholic tastes, they also serve up singer-lyricist Eddie Vedder. With his Brando brooding and complicated, tortured masculinity, he’s something we haven’t seen in a while — a heroic figure. Better still, he’s a big force without ~lol~; he bellows doubt.

Like Jim Morrison and Pete Townshend, Vedder makes a forte of his psychological-mythic explorations — he grapples with primal trauma, chaos, exultation. As guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready paint dense and slashing backdrops, he invites us into a drama of experiment and strife. “Animal,” “Daughter” and “Blood,” their terse titles urgently poetic, are songs of a kind of ritual passion, tapping into something truly wild.

And when Vedder roars, “Saw things … clearer … /Once you were in my rearviewmirror,” it seems that it’s not only some personal sorrow that he’s willing himself to tear beyond but the entire weight of the past itself.

Voicing the dreams and furies of a generation, Nirvana rock brilliantly in the now. They suggest a visceral understanding of rehab rites of passage and gen der overlap, stardom fantasy and punk nihilism. Their themes parallel both David Cronenberg’s “venereal horror” and David Lynch’s atonal wit, and their inchoate striving after feeling combats the blithe vacuity of outdated Warhol-style hipness. Blank generation? Not really, just young people fighting for some kind of meaning.

Nevermind, of course, spotlighted grunge and Seattle, making it obvious that in a hinterland far from America’s vigilant media capitals, space remained for uncooked vision. Punk guitar, pop hooks — the album sold trillions. And in Kurt Cobain it delivered a nervy singer and a mind representative of new, conventionally apolitical rebellion. With In Utero, Nirvana go deeper inside themselves; the prevailing mood is complex unease, tense with self-loathing and fitful pride. “Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle,” “All Apologies” and “Serve the Servants” are crisis music. Any real future will have to deal with the emotional overspill Nirvana’s songs bravely refuse to contain.

My Favorite Track(s):

5. Back For Vengeance
6. Power
7. Shadowlands
8. Dancing With Demons
9. Sacred Waters
10. Windrider

Review: Metalcrypt (5/5)

Axehammer were a legendary underground band from the mid-80′s who produced one EP that never even got released. For most bands that would be it, but not this one. Sentinel Steel’s metal boss Denis Gulbey got ahold of those recordings, had them remastered, and released the now-hallowed Lord Of The Realm disc. The strong response to that release motivated the band members to reform and get into the studio to record a long-overdue follow-up. So seven years after Lord Of The Realm we get Windrider, which absolutely kills. KILLS!

Twenty years after their glory days in the 80′s, these guys still have it, and Windrider is a crushing, smashing, headbanging lesson in what heavy ~censored~ metal is supposed to be about. From opening cracker “Stand Up And Fight” through the furious “Rise Up” and “Back For Vengeance”, all the way to the jaw-dropping title track, there is not a bad riff or an off note anywhere to be found. If you love old-school (read “real”) metal as much as I do, then you will be in heaven by track 2, I know I was. Hard to believe these guys have been out of the game this long, because they are tight. The solos are excellent, the riffs are rock-solid, and singer Bill Ramp just rules with grace and power to spare. A stellar, crunchy production job by the great Bill Metoyer certainly doesn’t hurt either.

Sentinel Steel records has put out some first-rate stuff over the years, but I honesty think this is the best album yet to bear the SS label. So much more than just a nostalgia trip, Windrider is one of the best True Metal albums in years. If you bow down before classic stuff like Overlorde, Attacker, Icarus Witch, or Wolf, then this is an album you cannot afford to miss. Highly Recommended. No, make that ~censored~ Essential.
