Review: Metalcrypt (5/5)

Axehammer were a legendary underground band from the mid-80′s who produced one EP that never even got released. For most bands that would be it, but not this one. Sentinel Steel’s metal boss Denis Gulbey got ahold of those recordings, had them remastered, and released the now-hallowed Lord Of The Realm disc. The strong response to that release motivated the band members to reform and get into the studio to record a long-overdue follow-up. So seven years after Lord Of The Realm we get Windrider, which absolutely kills. KILLS!

Twenty years after their glory days in the 80′s, these guys still have it, and Windrider is a crushing, smashing, headbanging lesson in what heavy ~censored~ metal is supposed to be about. From opening cracker “Stand Up And Fight” through the furious “Rise Up” and “Back For Vengeance”, all the way to the jaw-dropping title track, there is not a bad riff or an off note anywhere to be found. If you love old-school (read “real”) metal as much as I do, then you will be in heaven by track 2, I know I was. Hard to believe these guys have been out of the game this long, because they are tight. The solos are excellent, the riffs are rock-solid, and singer Bill Ramp just rules with grace and power to spare. A stellar, crunchy production job by the great Bill Metoyer certainly doesn’t hurt either.

Sentinel Steel records has put out some first-rate stuff over the years, but I honesty think this is the best album yet to bear the SS label. So much more than just a nostalgia trip, Windrider is one of the best True Metal albums in years. If you bow down before classic stuff like Overlorde, Attacker, Icarus Witch, or Wolf, then this is an album you cannot afford to miss. Highly Recommended. No, make that ~censored~ Essential.

Review: Metal-Observer (8.5/10)

For the third time already in a relatively short time the all star band around production giant Fredrik Nordström presents us with an album and the waves that “The Book Of Heavy Metal“ made were pretty damn big as one was flooded with superlatives all over. The first two albums absolutely had been to my taste, so that I was pretty curious about what the third strike had to offer. For a band that consists of such high carat musicians it is pretty remarkable that they already recorded the third album in the same line-up, normally you see more movement there…

Ralf already had shown himself a bit disappointed by the latest output of the Swedes, so how do I see it? Well, the beginning of the opening title track right away is a heart attack candidate, when Niklas Isfeldt let’s out a blood curdling scream. Once you have survived it, the song stomps through the room in best Eighties Metal fashion, again very catchy and powerful, good start, I would say. And also “Into The Moonlight” follows this up, powerful, catchy and melodic, with strong chorus, which has a light HAMMERFALL touch, so far I cannot really agree with Ralf’s disappointment… The guitar work is absolutely top, just listen to this solo, brilliant!

DREAM EVIL still pull out all cliches, but if the songs are good, I can definitely live with it, even though “The Sledge” cannot fully compete, “Crusaders’ Anthem” very nicely crashes through, as the title already implies, a true anthem, epic and melodic, once more borne by the strong guitars and the simply great vocals by Niclas, who I regard as one of the best of his trade, no question. Here we also once more get the certain Rock list, which DREAM EVIL showed in their compositions ever since their inception.

Also “Let’s Make Rock” is program, because this is the pure Heavy Rock/Metal that filled the arenas in the Eighties and this chorus will definitely have the whole crowd sing along, guaranteed! “Chosen Twice” is then an exquisite semi ballad with very big choir chorus and poignant guitar work, good one! “M.O.M.” with its chorus “Are you a man or a mouse“ can most probably be put into the same category as “Heavy Metal Jesus“, still super catchy and good! And also “The Mirror” is a strong one, where Niclas can how all his class.

That the production is absolutely top notch is out of doubt with Fredrik Nordström, clear and powerful, the musicianship is, as already mentioned, brilliant as well, the songs are good, therefore the rating is accordingly!

Soundgarden – Badmotorfinger

Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger

Notes

Bidding for a popular breakthrough with their second major-label album, Soundgarden suddenly developed a sense of craft, with the result that Badmotorfinger became far and away their most fully realized album to that point. Pretty much everything about Badmotorfinger is a step up from its predecessors — the production is sharper and the music more ambitious, while the songwriting takes a quantum leap in focus and consistency. In so doing, the band abolishes the murky meandering that had often plagued them in the past, turning in a lean, muscular set that signaled their arrival in rock’s big leagues. Conventional wisdom has it that despite platinum sales, Badmotorfinger got lost amid the blockbuster success of Nevermind and Ten (all were released around the same time). But the fact is that, though they’re all great records, Badmotorfinger is much less accessible by comparison. Not that it isn’t melodic, but it also sounds twisted and gnarled, full of dissonant riffing, impossible time signatures, howling textural solos, and weird, droning tonalities. It’s surprisingly cerebral and arty music for a band courting mainstream metal audiences, but it attacks with scientific precision. Part of that is due to the presence of new bassist Ben Shepherd, who gives the band its thickest rhythmic foundation yet — and, moreover, immediately shoulders the departed Hiro Yamamoto’s share of songwriting duties. But it’s apparent that the whole band has greatly expanded the scope of its ambitions. And Badmotorfinger fulfills them, pulling all the different threads of the band’s sound together into a mature, confident, well-written record. This is heavy, challenging hard rock full of intellectual sensibility and complex band interplay. And with their next album, Soundgarden would learn how to make it fully accessible to mainstream audiences as well.

Metallica Discography

February 15th, 2010

Metallica is an American heavy metal band that formed in 1981 in Los Angeles, California. Founded when drummer Lars Ulrich posted an advertisement in a Los Angeles newspaper, Metallica’s original line-up consisted of Ulrich, rhythm guitarist and vocalist James Hetfield, lead guitarist Dave Mustaine, and bassist Ron McGovney. McGovney and Mustaine were later ejected from the band, in favor of Cliff Burton and Kirk Hammett, respectively. The ejection of Mustaine has subsequently resulted in a feud between him and Metallica. In 1986, Metallica’s tour bus skidded out of control, and Burton was crushed under the bus and was killed. Jason Newsted replaced him, although he left the band in 2001 and was replaced by Robert Trujillo in 2003.

Jason Becker’s ‘collection’

February 15th, 2010

Jason Becker’s ‘Collection’ Out Now

Guitarist Jason Becker (David Lee Roth, Cacophony) has just released “Collection” on Shrapnel Records. This pure work of genius contains three new recordings totaling over 20 minutes in length and includes new performances by some of Becker’s guitar buddies: Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Michael Lee Firkins, Marty Friedman, Steve Hunter and Greg Howe. In addition, the CD is enhanced and contains some bonus material playable on computer.

Jason Becker began his career as a Shrapnel recording artist by joining forces with guitar virtuoso Marty Becker to form seminal progressive metal pioneers Cacophony. Amassing worldwide acclaim as a guitar virtuoso, Becker came to the attention of David Lee Roth who was looking for a guitarist to replace Steve Vai and the rest is history.

His first solo album “Perpetual Burn”, recorded when Jason was just 17, and through his second solo record “Perspective”, recorded after Becker came down with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS, a.k.a. Lou Gehrig’s Disease). Jason earned an international reputation for being one of the best composer/guitarists to emerge from the legendary Shrapnel shredding scene. Even as paralysis set in from his disease, Becker still had a strong desire to compose and “Collection” not only contains some of Becker’s favorite moments from his Shrapnel and David Lee Roth recordings, it also features three new Becker compositions, each as impressive as anything he has recorded in the past. Becker has enlisted some of the largest names in instrumental guitar music to perform the parts that he hears in his head and has as many as three guitarists per track trading off riveting performances.
