After his genre crossing experiments A Drop (With Camille Baz Baz’s Baz Baz Orchestra) and Paris Rockin’ (with Java) the electric dread Winston McAnuff has finally returned to his roots. This will please hardcore reggae fans; particularly in Winston’s adopted home of France, where some disliked Paris Rockin’s use of the accordion based “bal musette” they had been trying to escape since birth.

Outside France, however, these arrangements sounded exotic and brave, and Paris RockinÂ’ has been hailed as a modern classic by music lovers around the world. The question is, can McAnuff take the spirit of his later works into an album of straight roots and sate both his traditional fanbase and his new less reggae-centric followers alike?

The answer is a resounding “yes”. Nostradamus, produced by Clive Hunt and featuring Earl Chinna Smith on guitar and Leroy Horsemouth Wallace on drums, fuses hard, clean (slightly cold) roots arrangements with Winston’s more mature songwriting for a recording whose 12 cuts all say “I’m a hit”. As with Paris Rockin’, some reveal themselves early, such as the title track – riding a twin onslaught of bass and piano, inspired by Jimmy Radway’s rhythm to Desmond Young’s Warning, with an anti war lyric written by Winston’s brother John. Takin’ It All, the only non-reggae composition on the disc, also stands out. But, soon enough, every tune gets into your head, without ever using a hackneyed pop contrivance or falling back on a dull, roots-by-numbers device.

Nostradamus is another quality offering by an underrated star who continues to blossom with age, but carries one small caveat. Despite reggaeÂ’s down to earth image the best Jamaican musicians have never been hostage to received notions of authenticity. For his next album this hardcore reggae fan hopes Winston ignores the doubters, and lets his maverick ideas flow.

Faded Paper Figures began, like all great endeavors, as a side-project. Writing songs between dissertation chapters and frenetic bouts of southern California traffic, John (vocals/guitars) and Kael (guitars/keys/machines) were simply looking for an aesthetic and rigorous diversion. Two or three songs into the process, however, things started sounding incredible—much too good to have come from KaelÂ’s apartment bedroom. Eventually Heather (additional vocals/keys) began adding some beautiful harmonies, and FPF became the brilliant blend of indie-tronic chamber pop that dazzles and sizzles on every track in their debut album, “Dynamo.”

BZN (short for Band zonder Naam or “Band Without a Name”) was a Dutch band.

Bzn - Top 100

BZN started out as a pop-rock band in their native Volendam in 1966, playing early-Bee Gees-like harmony pop. The initial line-up consisted of Jan Veerman (vocals), Cees Tol (guitar), Evert Woestenburg (guitar) Jan Tuijp (bass guitar) and Gerrit Woestenburg (drums).

In the early Seventies, the band switched to hard rock and had its first successes, including a brace of Top 40 hits. After original singer Veerman left and drummer Keizer took his place behind the microphone, the band made a musical U-turn and opted for commercial radio pop, adding female co-vocalist Annie Schilder and laying the foundation for their status as the most popular Dutch band ever (in terms of hit singles and albums). BZN has had over 50 hits in the Dutch hit parade to date.

BZN’s claim to fame started with the song “Mon Amour” (1976), which held the #1 hit parade ranking for over 5 weeks. Outside of the Netherlands the band has had some success as well, amongst which several hits in South Africa (such as “Yeppa” in 1990) and minor successes with their French-language songs in Canada.

Through the years there have been many lineup changes, the most important of which have been the departure of Schilder in 1984 (replaced by Carola Smit) and in 1988 of the brothers Cees and Thomas Tol (keyboards), who until then had been responsible for most of the music and lyrics. The band remained nevertheless successful, making their last major change in strategy when they decided to write in Dutch instead of English as of 2003.

BZN are also responsible for the initial success of singer Jan Smit, who was discovered by BZN at the age of 10 and went on to have pop and schlager successes in The Netherlands, Germany and Belgium.

On February 15, 2006, BZN announced they would do one final tour and then call it quits. This goodbye tour ended 16 June 2007.
