Plot Outline:
An American safesracker named Zed (Eric Stoltz) is summoned to Paris by his childhood buddy, Eric (Jean-Hugues Anglade), to help pull off a robbery on the only bank in the city which is open on Bastille Day.
As soon as Zed arrives, suffering from jet lag, he spends the night with a prostitute named Zoe (Julie Delpy).
Then Eric arrives, who throws Zoe out and takes Zed out for a night on the town filled with drinking and every drug imaginable. After shooting heroin from the same needle, Eric casually mentions he has AIDS, with a what’s-the-big-deal kind of attitude.
Still barely coherant, Eric wakes him up the next morning & tells him the heist is going down today — while Zed was under the impression they’d be plannig it for at least two weeks.
Dreams of easy money quickly evaporate when the heist goes sour and Eric transforms into a psychotic, drug-crazed sociopath.
Zed is trapped in a situation beyond his control when heroin abuse, poor planning and the call-girl named Zoe (who as it turns out, also works at the bank) all conspire to turn the robbery into a very bloody seige.
This highly controversial first film by Academy Award winning filmmaker Quentin Tarantino was an instant cult classic and fast became the barometer by which Generation X gauged its own nihilism.
