Description:
This soft and ghostly masterpiece is one of the most perfect films ever made. The achingly beautiful Leonard Cohen soundtrack brings a quieted whisper to the frontier land where McCabe opens business and Mrs. Miller smokes opium to ease her pain. The story is sparse and the dialogue unimportant — aside from the scene where Beatty tells us he had poetry in him — and the only shift in the film comes when the businessmen try to buy out McCabe and he refuses them. This is hardly a “Western,” more like a visual Altman poem set in the West. And it’s not a revisionist Western or a film that sets out to break genre conventions, either — it’s just a more honest, less glamorized version. The brownish picture looks just amazing, with a light hue surrounding it, as if someone had breathed gently on a frosted window; and I hope I’m not the only one who loved the camera zooming in, especially on Beatty’s slightly dim face. (Tada!) The two actors are perfect with their characters, and that last scene, with McCabe sitting in the snow and Mrs. Miller laying sideways, getting stoned, is so fine.
